Real Bronx leadership for the many, not the few

Enough is enough. The Bronx deserves bold and powerful leaders. Leaders with the vision, guts and experience to get us through this immediate crisis. Leaders who will completely transform our economy to benefit working people, and not the wealthy few. We need Working Families Party champions. Now is the time for a political intervention.

Every corner of the world has been upended by the coronavirus. But it’s hitting America’s Black and brown and working class communities the hardest — and nowhere harder than in the Bronx.
Before the crisis hit, Bronxites did the work of taking care of New Yorkers — in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools; on public transit; and in buildings, grocery stores and warehouses.
Without having a say in it, Bronxites are on the frontlines of this crisis, taking care of the sick and ensuring the city keeps running. That’s why we need to be put first in any recovery plan.
There is deep power and a history of activism and resistance in the Bronx. The future of our borough will be shaped by what we do together.
By the numbers:
The Bronx accounts for nearly 20% of NY’s COVID-19 deaths, despite only representing 7% of the state’s population.
More than 4,400 Bronx residents have died of the coronavirus. 40,000 more have tested positive.
And more than 140,000 have lost their jobs. Many more struggle to pay rent and have no idea where their next meal will come from.
Who represents us?
The City, State and Federal Governments’ response to the crisis has failed the Bronx and too many of our elected leaders have been passive, even absent.
Instead of deeply funding our social safety net, the State government:
-
cut healthcare funding
-
slashed education funding
-
stayed silent in the face of a growing rent and homelessness crisis as unemployment has soared.
Since Covid 19 struck, the Federal Government has
-
provided meager relief to working people,
-
no relief for the undocumented,
-
thousands of kids who used to rely on school meals are going hungry.
But corporations are being bailed out to the tune of billions.
Systemic racism makes a deadly virus even more lethal to our community.
The Bronx is a borough of fighters.
If austerity and racist politics got us here, we need new, people-powered political transformation to drive change, heal and thrive.
Because of long-term neglect, Black and brown folks in the Bronx have worse air to breath, worse food to eat, worse paying and more dangerous jobs, worse buildings to live in and worse healthcare options. All of these things make Bronxites particularly vulnerable to this virus.
WFP stands for:
-
Health: free and universal healthcare now and forever, starting with those who have lost healthcare because they lost their jobs. Ensure healthcare providers have the equipment, staffing and resources they need.
-
Relief: provide relief for working class people not banks and landlords. Cancel rent for the duration of the crisis, provide support for all undocumented people, provide housing for the homeless, free incarcerated people, and ensure everyone gets recurring cash payment until the economy recovers from the crisis.
-
Recovery: create a massive jobs program — jobs that will give us clean air — and provide dignified and truly affordable housing.
-
Revenue: the wealthiest in our society have been reaping all the benefits for decades. They stand to benefit from this crisis. Meanwhile the economic crisis is causing our city and state to lose revenue. If we don’t make up the difference, thousands of public workers will lose their jobs, schools and our social safety net will be underfunded. We must tax the rich to ensure that the costs of this crisis are shouldered by those who can afford to bear them.
-
Protect Essential Workers: Adopt an essential workers bill of rights that provides hazard pay, safeguards whistleblowers, and protects the right to organize and form a union.
- End State Violence: cut funding for the police and invest directly in Black, brown, immigrant and working class communities and adopt real and impactful transparency, oversight, and disciplinary measures to help combat unchecked policy brutality.
