Show your support: Jumaane's plan for housing in NY
For way too long, the powerful in our state have seen housing not as the human right that it is, but as an opportunity to squeeze every last cent out of everyday New Yorkers. Tenants, homeowners, and the unhoused alike are hurting while corporate developers and billionaire real estate donors thrive.
With Jumaane Williams as governor, we can change that.
Here are just a few highlights of Jumaane's transformational plan for housing in New York:
- Solve the housing shortage by building one million quality, carbon neutral public housing units for working and middle-class New Yorkers, creating thousands of good jobs in the process.
- Protect tenants' rights by banning unconscionable rent increases and no-cause evictions under Good Cause Eviction legislation.
- Reform our property tax system so the rich finally pay their fair share, instead of being subsidized by sky-high tax rates for working and middle-class homeowners.
- Empower tenants and homeowners by promoting tenant unions and cooperative associations, as well as making sure that every tenant has a right to an attorney in housing court.
- Make homeownership achievable by creating statewide low-cost loans helping first-time home buyers — young folks, Black and brown families, working families, and other New Yorkers who have been denied opportunity.
We've let profit-motivated private developers dictate the New York housing market. It's time to put people in control.
